Chlorine dioxide is a yellowish-green gas, the most stable oxide of chlorine, and the only halogen oxide produced in large quantities. Chlorine dioxide is stable in its liquid state, but it can explode if contacted with certain substances. It condenses into bright orange crystals at about −59°c. As one of the oxides of chlorine, it is an extremely powerful and effective oxidant used in water treatment and bleaching.
